Take This Quiz and Find Out

Have you ever questioned if you have an addiction? This can be a difficult disorder that sneaks up on you and makes it hard to know when it is a problem. At Denovo Recovery, we believe that recognizing the signs of addiction is important for taking control of your life. Take the quiz and find out how we can help you and how we can provide resources if you think you might have an addiction.

What is Addiction?

Addiction is a chronic condition that affects the brain’s reward system (also known as the mesolimbic system) which includes motivation, and memory functions. It forces people to repeatedly take substances despite the harmful risks they may take. It can include drugs or alcohol, and activities like gambling, gaming, and even shopping.

Common signs of addiction include:

  • Losing control of how much you’re using.
  • Craving to use it or having an obsession with it.
  • Avoiding responsibilities at work, school, and home.
  • Continuing to use it despite knowing the harm it’s causing.
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using.

If you feel like you are going through similar things, this might be a sign. Our quiz can help you have a better understanding and how it’s affecting your life.

The Quiz

There are 10 questions designed to help you evaluate your current connection with substances or addictive behaviors. Be honest with yourself as you answer the questions; this quiz is meant to provide some clarity—there’s no judgment here.

For each question, rate yourself on a scale from 0 to 3, where:

  • 0 = Never
  • 1 = Sometimes
  • 2 = Often
  • 3 = Always
  1. Do you often find yourself thinking about drugs, alcohol, or addictive behaviors?
  2. Have you tried to cut back or stop using substances or behavior but found it difficult or impossible?
  3. Do you continue to use a substance or engage in a behavior even when you know it’s hurting you (physically, mentally, or socially)?
  4. Have you missed important responsibilities, like work or family events, because of your substance use or behavior?
  5. Do you feel anxious, irritable, or uncomfortable if you can’t use the substance or engage in the behavior?
  6. Do you use substances or engage in behaviors as a way to cope with stress, anxiety, or negative emotions?
  7. Have you needed to increase the amount of the substance to get the same effect?
  8. Do you hide your substance use from friends and family because you’re worried about their reactions?
  9. Have you experienced any negative consequences (legal, financial, or relational) due to your substance use or behavior?
  10. Do you feel like you’re losing control over your life because of the substance or behavior?

Scoring Your Results:

  • 0 – 7: Your score suggests that you likely don’t have an addiction, but it’s always a good idea to stay mindful of your habits.
  • 8 – 15: You may be developing an addiction or have early signs of problematic use. It’s important to pay attention to your behavior and consider seeking professional guidance.
  • 16 – 24: You are showing signs of a moderate addiction. It’s recommended to seek help to prevent further harm and to regain control over your life.
  • 25 – 30: Your score indicates a severe addiction. You should seek professional treatment to start your recovery journey.

Regardless of your score, if you feel like your substance use or behavior is affecting your life, it’s never too early or too late to reach out for help.

The Importance Of Finding Out Early

Early signs of addiction might seem small like a missed day of work, starting an argument with a loved one, or just using substances to unwind after a hard day. However, without addressing these early signs, addiction can quickly spiral out of control and lead to serious problems.

Addiction In Denial

  • “I can quit anytime I want.” Many people believe they can stop their addictive behaviors at any time. While this might be true for some, addiction can change the brain’s chemistry, making it incredibly difficult to quit without help.
  • “I’m only hurting myself.” Addiction doesn’t only affect you; it can affect the people around you—like family, friends, and colleagues. Watching you go through this could be hurting them the most.
  • “I haven’t hit rock bottom, so I’m not an addict.” Many people with addiction maintain jobs, relationships, and outward appearances, all while hiding this serious issue. It’s better to seek help before things get worse.
